Where to go camping in Colorado?

Where are some good places to go camping in colorado?

  • We have 5 days off for labor day and are new to the colorado area. We want to grab a tent and see the sights and natural beauty. Any suggestions on a neat place to go? Hot springs, ...show more

You're probably too late to get a camping spot, they fill up months before holidays. And no, you can't just go set up camp somewhere, the ecosystem is delicate. Since this is probably the last weekend it will be open, I would suggest a trip over Trail Ridge Road. Go up through Estes Park, have lunch, or Dinner in Grand Lake and explore that area, it's really cool. Or, go up to Glenwood Springs for a dip in the hot Springs and spend some time hiking the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. A word of warning though, it's going to be horrendously crowded all weekend. I would wait to try to camp till the weekend after labor day, it quiets down considerably.

Most campgrounds you need reservations for in advance for holiday weekends.. so check that before leaving. Also, in a tent--you need to be in a safe campground w/ no bears/coyotes etc. Check the Rocky Mtn National Park..near Estes Park and beyond. Remember, it can get very cold at night in the mountains, in Sept...even tho nice in the daytime.

You need to camp in designated campgrounds, not just stick your tent in the wilderness. There is too much private land interspersed in amongst the national forest land. And trust me, we get testy when people try to camp on our land. Here are links to the National Forest and Colorado Forest Service. This late your best bet would be to hope someone had canceled their reservation. You might call the Arapaho National Forest Station in Idaho Springs. They oversee a lot of smaller campgrounds and may know of an opening. Extra heavy sleeping bags.

Climb Mount Princeton or Mount Antero. I camped on Mount Antero during Memorial Day Weekend. I had no neighbors, aside from a few snowshoe hares. You are welcome to dispersed camping on National Forest lands as long as you set-up the tent at least 100 feet away from road, trail, or waterway.
