A crank powered radio or flashlight

I assume you mean when travelling. Normally you should have a small first aid kit, maybe an emergency blanket and a flashlight. You don't really need much more than that. If you are travelling by car have a fully stocked first aid kit, real and emergency blankets, water, flashlight, flares, fire extinguisher and a bottle of scotch (or at least a hip flask of bourbon)
