    Had you looked at BA's Banned and Restricted Items page (link below) before travelling, you would have seen that objects with a sharp edge, such as knives with a blade exceeding 6cm in length, axes, swords and the like, are prohibited from being taken on board. I would be inclined to suggest that the item in question isn't lost at all, but was seized at the departure airport for security reasons. I would further suggest that even if you *had* taken out travel insurance you wouldn't be covered for the "loss" under the circumstances.

If you checked the box with BA and have your receipt, and if the item did not end up at destination (lost somewhere in a transfer or whatever), then you can file a claim with BA: airlines have insurances and passengers' luggage are covered for and up to a specific amount (don't remember exactly). File a claim with BA.
