Answer:
This is my summary of Stalin. Josef Stalin born Iosef Jughashvili in Gori Georgia. Attended seminary school to become a priest where he became involved with a students group that introduced him to banned literature and socialism. Realized the church wasn't for him and left. Some say he was kicked out. Was basically the money man for the socialist movement. Trotsky organized the Red Army Stalin robbed banks to fund it. After the revolution when Lenin died power was split between Stalin, Kamenev, and Zinoviev on one side and Trotsky and Bukharin on the other. Lenin intended Trotsky to be the leader. Stalin slowly eliminated Bukharin and Trotsky. Trotsky was assassinated in Mexico while staying with painter Diego Rivera. Bukharin was executed in Russia. Stalin then furthered his power by eliminating Zinoviev and Kamenev by bogus trials and executions. Person by person Stalin eliminated all potential enemies and had all his allies so paranoid of being watched they would turn on each other at any hint of disloyalty. Stalin had total control. Solzhenitsyn the author was sent to a Gulag for writing a letter to a friend criticizing comrade Stalin. Russia was then placed under a forced modernization and collectivization which resulted in massive famines. The people of the Ukraine bore the brunt of this. By todays standards; it is classified as an attempted genocide of the people of Ukraine. The number of Ukrainians that starved to death has been listed between 15-60 million. Military service became mandatory for everyone. During WWII he had his generals march wave after wave of poorly equipped and badly trained Soviet Soldiers into the German war machine. Refusal to obey blindly led to everyone from Generals to the lowest private being executed, if they where lucky, tortured by the NKVD or sent to the Gulags or labor camps if they weren't. He died March 5, 1953 of a stroke. Was he a bad man? Yes and no. Stalin was a siege socialist, he believed in building socialism from within and the great cause spreading by example. If Trotsky had taken power, things would have gotten really bloody. Trotsky believed in spreading socialism by war and revolution throughout Europe. So in that aspect, Stalin was the lesser of two evils. Secondly. Stalin's forced collectivization and modernization of the Soviet Union allowed for them to take a serious bite out of Nazi Germany's army. You can wave the American flag as much as you want, that war would not have been won if not for the Russians. They lost anywhere between 11-17 million civilian casualties and 20 million soldiers. This is not including the starvation deaths. His policies also put the first satellite into space, the first dog into space and the first man into space and created a military machine that had even the US shitting their pants. Under Stalin, Russia produced more doctors and teachers to be sent to Third world countries for humanitarian and granted propaganda reasons. Also, literacy went from almost 0% to 100% within a few generations. Science, the Arts, Sports and medicine made huge strides under Stalin. He also almost wiped out religion entirely in Russia ( I personally thing was a good thing ) He also lived in the same Daka ( people's housing ) as everyone else in Russia. His only extravagance was a piano. His successors couldn't say the same. They where pigs at the trough at the people's benefit. On the flip side, he wiped out a large portion of the Ukrainian population, sent untold Russians to forced labor camps where they where literally worked to death, sent millions of others to be tortured to death in Gulags for things as minor as pointing out that Stalin had people's faces literally painted out of all state pictures and all mention of them wiped out of all government records. He also came up with the invisible brand. A red hot poker inserted anally. This is the longer version but there are things missing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Stalin#Childhood_and_education.2C_1878.E2.80.931899

Joseph Stalin was a communist dictator who rules the Soviet Union during WWII to the Cold War. He has sentence around couple millions of people to death either by political execution, labor camps, repression and others. Even thought he did reform Russia in many ways, there's no doubt that he sacrifice a lot of people to achieved that.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee from 1922 until his death in 1953. Early researchers attempting to count the number of people killed under Stalin's regime were forced to rely largely upon anecdotal evidence. Their estimates ranged from 3 to 60 million.[50] After the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, evidence from the Soviet archives became available. The archives record that about 800,000 prisoners were executed under Stalin for either political or criminal offenses, while around 1.7 million died in the GULAG and some 390,000 perished during kulak forced resettlement – a total of about 3 million victims. Many reasons for why he killed them. Many because they were Christians and religion was not a big thing with the State. Others he believed to be genetically inferior (less evolved) for example thousands on Polish people. He was a very bad person. If Hitler hadn't have lived, Stalin would probably be called the most evil man of the 20th century.

He was a Russian communist leader. I don't know how many people he killed, but I suppose a lot of them died of starvation. Whatever the number, he killed more of his own countrymen than anyone in history.

Joseph Stalin was the Communist "dictator" of the former Soviet Union (Russia and others). Now, a bad person I don't know; it all depends on your point of view and prejudices I guess. Hope that helped any.

It takes longer to type in your question than going to wikipedia and copying pasting wherever you need it. People write books on the guy, so don't think it can be as simple as you think. Yes, he was a bad guy.
