Theodore Roosevelt was a high class hunter. He shot many animals as a young man and as president he took short trips to shoot bears and other animals He even took a trip to Africa and shot many animals that are on the endangerd species list and some of his animals are in the Natural History museum in Washington DC Don't shoot a cub if just Roosevelt's own hunter ethics that Roosevelt observed. some hunters shoot anything that moves in their gun sights Some hunters don't shoot baby animals because they will have some difficulty of boasting about their kill with friends and fellow hunters ( Not that they have any sympathy for the animal) Some hunters don't shoot mothers and cubs together for cultural reasons ( First nations in Canada have this rule) Some hunters don't hunt animals lying down (Not moving) or feeding as some hunters do think it is not a sport to shoot a lying animal or feeding animal. some hunters deliberately feed the animal trick to shoot it (ie bear baiting), while it is feeding I do respect Roosevelt for his conservation work in America ( He created several National Parks) but to your question Roosevelt may have taught shooting a bear cub was useless as he could not mount it in White house and boast about it I don't think for Roosevelt it would have mattered if it was a large grizzly bear he shot was male , female or pregnant he would possibly considered it as collateral if the bear pregnant.. Some skilled hunters can recognize the difference between a female and male bear when they spot one I am not sure if Roosvelt had this skill.

At that point in time, a "hunter" tended to kill anything, regardless of sex or condition. Unless he was a Veterinarian, then he would have no idea that any animal was pregnant unless it was REALLY obvious.

It looks like Jariya gave you a brilliant answer and actually addressed your questions and sounds right. However, as you know me I like to research and find out the answers for myself and see it with my own eyes. I googled: do hunters know a bears gender THis is what I found: http://larrywbrown.blogspot.com/2009/10/difference-between-male-and-female.html This describes how to tell apart Black Bears, pretty interesting actually. It appears it is not an exact science and would be difficult especially if you aren't able to examine them closely. I think the first answerer is right, that he probably wasn't interested in the baby bear because he couldn't mount it on his wall and show it off. I'm sure he didn't even think about a mother bear or taking it away from it's young or if it was pregnant. Hope you found this answer matched your question. Smile
