Answer:
Hostels are a very good way of meeting people whilst you travel. They are a cheap place to stay but you will typically be in a dormitory of 4 people (although some will have up to 12 people). I've stayed in hotels, and still do, and have had a fantastic time. I tend to stay in Hostelling International hostels (of which the English YHA is a member) these days as you know what you will get - they have a certain set standard in order to be associated with HI. I have also stayed in some fantastic independants but also stayed in some dirty hostels with bad atmosphere - the independants tend to be more hit and miss than the HI hostels.

Hi! Before staying in a hostel/youth hostel please read the reviews of hostels you intend to stay. Moreover try to take a Private Bed and not shared one, even if you will have to pay for the second bed, because the whole room will be yours, and you must ensure that the bath is attached in the Private Room. you can stay in women only rooms. plus sometimes i feel safer in a room full of people. single rooms are far too expensive. interrail is a really good way to travel europe. it took me 5 weeks to go from leeds bradford-copenhagen-hamburg( festivel)-berlin-warsaw(a bit naff)-krakow(fantastic)-budapest-vienna-... the italian coast-pisa-genoa-interlakken-geneva-pari... so you can fit a lot in

Briefly a youth hostel is a place where there are a number of dormitories with anything upwards of one person in each room, some as large as 25 per room but normally your looking at 4-8 people per room. There will also be bathrooms, sometimes en suite sometimes not, there wil be some kind of common rom which may have a TV or a DVD player or some board games, they'll be sofas etc. there may be a kitchen and there may be internet access, in some plces breakfast is included, in some places dinner is to. It really depends on where you stay, some are very clean, some are not! again depends. if you feel nervous at the start try and stay in single sex dorms but i can promise you 9 times out of 10 you will feel totally safe. you can be roomed with some odd people but then it is more incentive to get out and explore, its not a hotel its a bed for a night. I couldnt reccomend them enough, dont pay the extra for a private room, its cheaper to stay in a hotel if you do that, just be brave. I went around Europe and it was fine, have a look on www.hostelworld.com www.hostels.com and read the reviews before you book, from the ratings you'll know what its like ie clean, safe, secure. if the reviews put u in any doubt then dont stay there, there will always be another hostel. Its just like reading a dodgey review about a hotel

Hostels are not my style, but my 60-year-old cousin stays in them a lot.
