Npower have just upped my monthly combined direct debit to £172 which I think is excessive. Am I being ripped off?

Answer:
Sounds very high to me! We have a smallish 4 bed detached. £105/month dual Direct Debit is our payment! However we have cavity wall insulation, 440mm loft insulation, double glazing, condensing boiler (gas central/water heating), I have draught-proofed around doors etc, just fitting heat deflectors behind the radiators, thermal blackout blinds on several rooms (for night time) behind the curtains. We have recently retired so are home most of the day. We run the heating from 07:00 - 22:30 with thermostat control. Thermostat is set at 19C and we can maintain +/-23C in our lounge (even across the recent very cold snap). The rest of the house is uniformly warm. Our kitchen has a small radiator and was historically cold. I investigated and found when the fitted kitchen was installed a gap had been left and we had a hellish draught. A gunge gun soon solved that and raised the temperature considerably! Our front door faces into the prevailing wind and although double glazed can feel cold around it. We now use a draught excluder roll about 4" diameter along the bottom in the winter. If we have to answer the door/go out just kick it to one side. We have also fitted a full height lined curtain which we use during the winter. Hope this helps. We have done our insulation over the years so if you haven't got much now is the time to start!

I am currently paying £63 per month for electricity (no pun intended) and £76 per month for gas. I have a large, three bed semi in the North-West. It is an Edwardian house so not very energy efficient (high ceilings, solid walls - no cavity). We tend to only heat the rooms as and when they are in use so at any one time only two or three rooms are being heated. Heating is by individual gas fires or gas heaters and most of the lights are energy-saving lamps. Remember that, if you have central heating, lowering the thermostat temperature by one degree centigrade can reduce heating fuel use by 10%. I get my electricity from e-on and my gas from British Gas.

I have a 2 bed house and pay £95 each month by direct debit for gas & electric, so I think you are paying way too much. There was something on Watchdog on BBC 1 last week about people being charged too much because they have a metric meter, but their supplier thought they had an imperial meter and this resulted in huge overpayments. Might be worth a look on the BBc website to make sure this isn't the case here. I'm sure you know about USwitch.com also where you can compare suppliers and this will give you a good idea of what you should be paying. Good luck

on dual fuel about £126 per month mine has gone from £40 to £ 85 per month and that's just for gas and i am one bed roomed house our government should be clapping down on this no wonder there is no spare cash about
mr help if i can
Woah! Erm, to give you a comparison, our 4 bedroom semi (4 students, so we use a fair amount of electricity) works out at £60 a month between us for electricity and about £30 a month between us for gas. (we're on a meter for electricity which is supposedly more expensive) £172 doesn't seem right unless you're using ALOT of electicity. Check your meter against your most recent reading just to make sure they're not massively over-estimating.
