    - if it is vented wrong it could produce carbon mon oxide which could kill you - this is one question I would not ask yahoo questions and answers - I worked as an electrician - if I were you I would go into a phone book try to find a reputable " expert " and have the expert check out your installation and answer your questions - it would cost some money but the money would be well spent - the big trouble would be finding a REAL expert there are so many scam artists and so many other people out there who pretend to be knowledgeable but who really aren't knowledgeable - because you ask that means you are not an expert - I think it would be worth getting the installation inspected just for another reason - that reason being to make sure your chimney is up to snuff - I would guess gas has a smaller fire and produces a smaller more localized source of heat - - - - I would guess that a wood fire starts small gets big then gets small - and it would be nice to know that your chimney is built right and can handle the higher temperatures - plus that venting - - carbon mon oxide is dangerous stuff

easily answered by someone you need to call in anyway... the chimney sweep..... they'll know if your chimney is large enuff and show you how to use the gas fireplace for both fuels..... and you really must have the chimney inspected before you have ANY type of fire there..... safety first!!....

The answers about the chimney and flue are pretty good, however the main thing I would worry about is that gas line in the fire box. Do you really want to build a fire on an active gas line. I would remove the gas line completely out of the fire box and maybe another few feet before burning any wood.
