How much would it cost for central air conditioning in a home that is not set up for it in any way?

  • Answer:

The only way you can find out is to call at least three air conditioning contractors that do installation and get estimates from them. No one can give you an idea without going to your home and taking measurements of it.

-How BIG is the House, & how well Insulated is it ?? You could be talking about a Sizable Investment here; 10 or 15K- depending on a LOT of Things. Shop around for Estimates. -In the long run it might be Worth It- because you might be able to save alittle on your Electric Bills every Summer- too! :)

a few thousand dollars because central air isn't a easy task, but look around for estimates and find the best one. Good luck

I had this done about 4 yrs ago & it cost me $6,000.00 in OKLA. I guess it would depend on what state you are living & maybe the square footage of house. My house only has about 1,000 sq ft. It was well worth it.

Right of the bat, having no vents makes the process much more expensive. Houses that heat with hot air via vents cost far less, so you're looking at a large cost just in terms of that alone, PLUS repairing all the walls, repainting etc. from the vent installation. And, your home may not have the clearance necessary to install central air without impacting plumbing or electrical work. Again, Ka-Ching, Ka-Ching. We looked at central as we have baseboards and then went shopping around (though the best time to do the shopping is before the real heat comes.) I can't stand loud ACs, but we got some very good ones that are not loud at all and the total cost for 5 units was less than 1/5th the estimate for installing central air. The newer models (and if you are buying six, the salesperson should be happy to plug one or two in for you so you can judge the sound, if not go elsewhere) are quiet and efficiently cool. If he/she won't do it, don't buy them there. (I've gotten Sears, Home Depot and Lowes to do this, Best Buy would not.) Our downstairs has an open floor plan, and one supersize window unit works without excess noise. Smaller unit are also quiet and take care of the bedrooms. You just have to REALLY shop around. A good trick is to go online and compare various prices from Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy and some other shops and go in like you are buying a car. If you are going to buy 5 or 6 that is a big commission for a sales associate. Good luck.
