    They are different. And I think they're meanings will change as time goes on. To me, Modern means cutting edge, artsy, new-wave, appealing to a narrow group. Contemporary is like a tamer version of Modern. I see it as following the trends set by modern styles, but toning it down, more wide spread appeal. Right now, in the past decade at least, contemporary has meant cleaner, simpler lines, more solid colors, and a lot of European style influence.

There is no difference between contemporary and modern. It's merely semantics. The words are interchangeable for the most. I have no idea what mid-century styles you are asking about unless you are referring to 50's style furniture which would be more retro than modern or contemporary. That is an entirely different look than what one would consider contemporary today.
