How did both plants and animals evolve nearly identical means of sexual reproduction?

    Meiosis is necessary for sexual reproduction in eukaryotes. While most protists are haploid, and they reproduce asexually, sexual reproduction is known among protists, although it is mostly facultative rather than obligatory. Meiosis is also known in protists, in both protozoans and in algae. It would appear then that meiosis evolved quite early among eukaryotes, even before multicellullar organisms such as fungi, animals and plants did. Therefore these groups simply inherited meiosis from protists that were already capable of sexual reproduction, meaning they did not have to evolve meiosis or sexual reproduction independently of each other. That in turn means that the similarities are due to common ancestry, rather than convergent evolution.

Algae and protozoa had already evolved similar sexual means of reproduction long before higher organisms evolved - we retained such characteristics because of their adaptive benefit - indeed we would never have evolved if these early lineages had not possessed such traits.
