This is not true, in fact in the provinces of Alberta Manitoba Quebec and a few more the drinking age is 18 (its 19 in Ontario) I recommend drinking in Quebec or on the east coast, as beer at bars is generally cheaper. Most popular bars in Ontario will cost you 5-6 dollars minimum for a drink.

You are in Canada you follow CANADIAN rules which means not just the drinking age but also speed limits in kilometers not miles for example. Just like when a Canadian goes to the US must follow US rules for drinking. In Canada you must be 18 to purchase alcohol in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, while 19 in the other 7 provinces and 3 territories.

You are obliged to follow the laws of the jurisdiction. Your nationality has nothing to do with it. In Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec the drinking age is 18. In the seven other provinces and the three territories the drinking age is 19. Many Asian countries don't even have a minimum drinking age. Many European countries have a minimum age of 16. None of this matters, while in Canada, you follow Canadian law.
