What Is Osmosis And Diffusion?

What is the difference between diffusion and osmosis?

  • here are the defintions from my textbook Diffusion-the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration Osmosis-the diffusion of water ...show more

  • Answer:

Diffusion is where the molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. This means that the molecules will split apart. Unlike diffusion, osmosis is the diffusion of water through a selectively permeale membrane. it is the movement of mainly water molecules that move from a lower conventration to a higher concentration. This means that durring osmosis the molecules eventually makes its way through a membrane in order to reach equilibrium with the other side of the membrane...... thats what i think..i dont know though i havent really got into depth with this stuff

Their differences are derived entirely from their definitions: Diffusion - the process by which there is net movement of particles from region of high conc. to region of low conc. Osmosis - the process by which there is net movement of water molecules from region of high water potential to region of low water potential across a partially permeable membrane Differences: 1. The net movement of particles involved (any solute/ particle in diffusion, only water molecules in osmosis) 2. Diffusion may occur with/without a membrane, a membrane is required for osmosis 3. What causing the net movement: In diffusion, brownian motion. In osmosis, solute potential - the force in which solutes (eg, Na+, Cl-) tend to attract water molecules to themselves.
