Answer:
You - like the majority of people - are ignorant of even the basic tenets of the theory of evolution. The need for a "missing link" that is somehow half-man and half-chimp is an outright fallacy promoted by creationists in an attempt to discredit evolution. The evolution of man is not a "chain", leading from chimpanzees to modern Homo sapiens. Chimpanzees and Homo sapiens both shared a common ancestor...modern humans are not directly descended from modern chimpanzees. We HAVE found fossil evidence of plenty of pre-sapien species from whom our evolutionary paths are more recently diverged from than chimpanzees.

Finding the missing link, such as half human/half chimpanzee, would make evolution disappear. Finding the common ancestor between chimpanzees and humans would prompt Creationists and Young-Earthers to claim that God put it there to test our faith etc etc. There is enough evidence for evolution that, if accepted, should make creationism disappear. The evidence is not the problem, it is the acceptance which is difficult. So, no, religion would not disappear. Mainstream religions, including the Catholics, already accept evolution, and the walls did not cave in on their churches, just like they did not collapse when they accepted that the Earth orbited the Sun. . EDIT : The answerer below, Josie, is a prime example of the ignorance perpetrated by Creationists. "Evolutionism" does not equate Atheism , as this would imply that the Pope is an atheist, when clearly this is not the case. Also, most scientists (99%) of all religions who support evolution would argue that it is not a religion. It has nothing to do with belief, and everything to do with not ignoring evidence. As to the money side of it, most scientists earn the same as nurses, teachers and other professionals. If you wish to see wealth, go to a church where they preach creationism, such as the fundamentalist Christian Churhes in the US, and ask where they got the money for the massive edifices they call churches, the houses and cars for the evangelical preachers. Golden calves for worship, pray and pay ministries. At least scientists, in general earn an honest living. .

they will deny the plausability of evolution as they do already creationism has no evidence and yet they defend it so no matter how much evidence evolution has creationism will always be defended

Many "missing links" have been found over the past century and a half since Darwin wrote The Origin of Species. The pattern of human evolution from pre-human ape-like ancestors is firmly established. These findings have been accepted by the majority of people, religious or not, and it has not affected religion in the slightest. It certainly hasn't caused a world crisis. Why are you asking about the in "Astronomy & Space" anyway?

There is no missing link. The so-called missing link is a myth. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/8932/cenozoic.htm

People will never let go of their faith because most of us need something bigger to believe in even though Science is God.

There is no missing link, because there really is no way to prove evolution. We all no it happened, but that still doesn't mean there isn't a god or ultimate power.

Don't be afraid to ask questions! Considering the population sizes of the early species of primates, hominids and the homo genus and the likelihood of fossil creation and preservation, we are highly unlikely to discover a continuous sequence of transitional fossils between a common primate ancestor and ourselves. We're very lucky to have found what we have. As for the impact on religion... Well that battle has been fought for many, many years. Some people can't accept scientific evidence if it contradicts their beliefs.
