How to seperate Potassium Chloride from Sodium Chloride?

  • Can someone give me any ideas on how to separate potassium chloride from sodium chloride in low sodium salt? I want the potassium chloride to displace the sodium in sodium chlorate ...show more

  • Answer:

The solubilities(in water) are very different so that would be the route to examine.I will add more later;I am considering fractional crystallisation so it's to the big books for me. Ok.done a bit of reading:At 0 deg C. water is saturated with 18 g of KNO3 and&3 g of NaNO3 per 100 mls of water:but I'm not sure how that works out with the mixed salts; At about 63 deg.C.Water dissolves the same concentrations(about135g /100ml of water)of beither salt.Greater degrees of purity may involve fratioal crystallisation.I don't have access to a ternary equilibrium diagram for the system water/NaNO3/KNO3.Tis up to you now, good luck

Ar... Na=23g Cl=35g K=39g Cl=35g So... Na+Cl= 58g K+Cl=74g 58/100*33=19.14g (33% NaCl) 74/100*65=48.1g (65% KCl) Sorry I didn't explain, this is what the atom economy would be if you were to use those percentages.
