How to tell if a tsunami is coming?

How cn you tell when tsunami is coming?

  • Answer:

Fortunately now, at least on Phuket, you'll hear the alarm. But, the tide goes out way more than usual, then comes in a bit, repeats a few times like that each with really clean blue looking water, and then finally a horrible noise (like a loud train) when it is right about there. I used to live on Phuket island, and had a few friends who were working on the beach that day. They said they thought the whole tide thing going on was strange, but when they saw all the dogs take off they did, too. I was away for Christmas, but was very happy all my friends were safe. A lot of folks weren't so lucky.

Go to the beach and wait---when it comes, you'll know it!

I'm no expert but if the tide suddenly goes out when it shouldn't.........run.Any earthquakes felt or on the news?Get higher. Why? Are you worried about them?If you're going to Thailand don't be overly concerned, the last tsunami was a one in a lifetime event.Keep safe but don't let it spoil your life.

From the last unfortunate experience when the tide is going back much further than normal. Also animals react very strange!

I guess everyone is right. And, there's really no telling of when it's coming then. They talked about installing a warning system, but I'm not sure whether it's in place yet or not. But, animal reactions are tipped to be the best bet. Run after the elephants. They know these things are coming hours before.

You can but that is depending in which country you are in. In the U.S. or Japan, tsunami events are declared via emergency chanels. Other countries don't have the technology or money for it.

Regarding the theory about the tide suddenly going out when it should not is false. It holds true in this region when the Asian tsunami hits but the opposite direction in Africa, it was the opposite. The wave came straight without warning or any tide suddenly going out. So the best is the animals theory, tsunami warning and watch for any unusual sign!

Well, now in Thailand, the tsunami warning should be working fine and warn you in plenty of time. Hopefully. Otherwise, the signs as reported from the last event was that suddenly, animals were agitated and just wanted to move on to higher ground. The show animals in Phi Phi were doing that and refused to perform when the waves struck. They probably can feel and hear the waves way out. There was also an absence of the usual sea birds. Strange animal behaviour was noted. The other sign was the extra low tide experienced. Many folks find the sea bed was more exposed and some ventured out to collect souvenirs, further than the normal low waterline. This is usually a sign that the waves are gathering intensity out in the ocean, just waiting to crash back. Tsunami can be caused by a few factors, earthquake is one of them. A super storm has the ability to churn out tsunami-like waves too as experienced last month in the Pacific Ocean. Massive landslide into the ocean or ice-berg activity can also set off tsunami. So, is is always best to have a radio with you, not a walkman or discman or mp3 player plugged into your ears.
