Is Hong Kong A Country?

Is Hong Kong a country?

  • Is Hong Kong like its own independent country with a different government of that of China? I have seen several times and heard of Hong Kong denominated as a country of its own. Is it?

  • Answer:

Hongkong is actually the S.A.R ( Special Administration Region) of China with its own government, society, law, economy, and judiciary system. Hongkong system is not the same with China's system, even though China has the influence over Hongkong. Hongkong was once British territory when China gave Hongkong to the British, due to the Nanking treaty agreement. China gave Hongkong in order to fulfill the Nanking agreement, as the result of the Opium War. Since then, the British ruled Hongkong for about over 100 years and gave their influence to Hongkong. All of Hongkong's great managements especially society, laws, and political system were managed by the British. British have contributed so many things to Hongkong, until Hongkong gains its affluence until today. Then, during the year of 1997 Hongkong was "reunified" to China in order to fulfill the Sino-British join under the "one country, two system" agreement. Since Hongkong reunified to China, many things are heavily controlled or influenced by China especially regarding politics and economy. Even though Hongkong still mainatined its own society, government, and judiciary system China still controls Hongkong in many ways. Many people Hongkong are hugely disappointed with China's control over Hongkong, which cause the many of Hongkong people demand for international suffrage and election in the year of 2017. Hongkong people heavily dislike China's control over Hongkong and they are struggling to be free from China's control.

Hong Kong is not now, nor has it ever been a country. It was British Overseas Territory (like a colony) for 100 years, having been leased from the Qing Dynasty, with the lease continued by the Republic of China in the early 20th century. Now, HK is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. Of some interest is that the PRC still allows Hong Kong to fly its own flag, whereas the other SAR (called Xinjiang; formerly East Turkistan/Dzungar Empire) and the Tibet Autonomous Region (formerly Tibet) are NOT allowed to fly their flags because they USED TO BE COUNTRIES until they were invaded and conquered by the Chinese.

Not a country, it is a special region with own law, education, welfare, visa, etc... Hong Kong just doesn't have the military. Hong Kong issues its own visa different from China.

Hong Kong is not a country, it's one of the 2 Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of China. Politically, geographically, culturally, Hong Kong is part of China, although it used to be a British colony for about 150 years until 1997. For over a century Hong Kong had adopted the British systems that are very different from the legal, administrative, education system and lifestyle from the rest of China and it had established its own government, central bank, immigration, court of law, police force all these years. In order to maintain the city's stability, China lets Hong Kong acts and governs on it own other than for military and foreign affairs.

No, Hong Kong is a special administration region of China, however, it is bestowed all the powers except military power and diplomatic power by China's Central government.

Not a country but a special administritive region of the People's Republic of China. Its autonomy was signed on the 1997 return of Hong Kong for 50 years. Expires in 2047, it does not have a military or its own foreign policy. Just type in Hong Kong SAR passport and you will see, their nationality is chinese.

No Hong Kong is not a country. It's a special administrative city. It does have a different government than China but that's because Hong Kong was ruled by the British and they gave British colonial rule over Hong Kong but after China won the independence. It was added on to China. However, Hong Kong is "One country, two systems". It has a different money, different government, and different language but it's still not a country.
