Gerd P is correct But if you are not of the countries he listed , you need to apply for a visa before you travel. If this is a tourist visit the travel agent or airline or hotel can get that done for you , no need to go to embassy. The rate will vary as those tour operators take handling charges, but I believe the official tourist visa cost is 100 AED only. The only type of visa that can be had in UAE airports is a transit visa , also known as "96 hour" permit. But as the name says , it is maximum for 96 hours (4 days) and if you are getting the milk free why buy the cow then.

British citizens do not require a visa before their arrival in the UAE and will be given a 30 day visa on arrival. The best I could find on cost was on an American website which stated: A 30-day visa costs $57. This works out at about £35, but I don't know how long the information has been out there. It might be best to enquire with who you are flying with.

No you don't need a visa only if you are there for more than 30 days
