I suspect you don't need long needles. Regular ones will do fine. If the pattern tells you to cast on 10 stitches and knit 100 rows for one strap then you will want to cast on 10 stitches with one ball of yarn and on the same needle cast of another 10 stitches with another ball of yarn. Row 1: Knit across the first 10 stitches with the first ball of yarn and then knit across the second 10 stitches with the second ball of yarn.. Row 2: Repeat row 1 99 times. If you only have one ball of yarn left you can use each of the ends for each strap. I knit sweater sleeves like this.

Use long needles and cast on the required number of st using the outside end of the yarn.. push to the end of the needle. Pull the yarn end from the center of the yarn and cast on again the same as the first then knit as you would normally. push to the end of the working needle , then knit the next section and repeat. Personally , I would use two separate skeins myself.
