Ignorance, think about it, can the U.S be considered a dangerous country? Don't people here in America get killed and raped everyday? Does that automatically Americans are dangerous savages? Does it mean we must ask safety questions to survive America? :(

I am a US citizen, born and partially raised in Kenya. The country is very very very beautiful....the people are very very very friendly, and awesome. Foreigners, believe it or not, are far safer in Kenya than the local natives. You will get a lot of attention everywhere you go (banks, malls, hotels, restaurants.. etc etc...) because Kenyans embrace the ideal of being very welcoming to their guests. Your best bet, however, is to avoid the country during elections. Elections are scheduled for March 4, so steer clear before, and at least till the results are officially announced and embraced by the country. Anything short of that is a pure crap shoot. I would reschedule my trip till after the elections.

I have friends who spend 3-6 months in Kenya every year - working at an orphanage. Often she goes on her own. Perhaps her safety tips might help you? Always be aware that Kenya is a very dangerous country. That doesn't mean you shouldn't go, but being aware can keep you safe. Kenya is a male dominated society. Women are not respected. They have no rights. The police are completely corrupt. So if you were in trouble and went to the police, they would be more likely to rape you (and give you aids) than to help you. This isn't because they are bad people. It is because they see white women as being "easy" and therefore available for sex with anyone and everyone at all times. Always check with the charity you are working for where it is safe for you to go. Don't even slightly break the rules. Don't go anywhere on your own. Don't use public transport. The Kenyan police will often arrest white foreigners for no reason. (Well, the reason is so that you or your family will pay the arresting officers a nice, fat bribe!) You need to find out how the charity you will be volunteering with deals with these incidents. Ask for proof. I know someone who was in jail (a Kenyan jail is no joke!) for a week. Her charity made no effort for help her. Nor did they contact her family. It was sheer co-incidence that another white, foreign prisoner happened to see her. After he had arranged with the jailers to take him to a bank to get money for them, he went straight to his embassy and told them he had seen a white, foreign woman in the jail and they went and rescued her (at great expense!) She was one of the positive stories - she wasn't raped by either the police or prison guards, but she is in her 60's. If you are younger than that, you would be unlikely to get off that lightly. Remember, almost all blood for blood transfusions, and hypodermic needles, are contaminated with HIV. Take a first aid kit with you - with plenty syringes with needles. If you are conscious, refuse any blood transfusions. If you are going to a malaria area (or even might visit that area - mainly near Mombasa), then take your malaria tablets properly! You start a couple of weeks before you go and keep taking them until a couple of weeks before you come back. Malaria kills! Even with modern, western medicine. Every year, dozens (or more) Americans die of malaria after a holiday in Kenya. Don't go anywhere near the north of the country. Unless you want to be raped and killed. If you follow all the above advice, you stand a reasonable (not good, but reasonable) chance of getting back home again without being raped, infected with aids, or murdered. Have a great time!
