Answer:
I did it once and it was so painful that I will never do it again. Every time I even moved my leg underwater the resistance against my ankle was uncomfortable, and kicking - well, after a few kicks the pain was unbearable. Kicking with just one leg is for kids - for a full-grown adult it is extremely difficult. After only a few minutes I got out of the water. My ankle was a little swollen for the rest of the day and hurt far worse than it had for several days. Depending on the type of sprain, I wouldn't recommend it.

Absolutely! And your ankle will thank you for giving it the long relaxing soak. Just take the ace bandage off before you get in the water so it doesn't tighten up and cut off the circulation. I wouldn't try feather kicking with that foot and if frog kicking hurts don't do that. A simple sissors kick will probably work OK as will just kicking with the other leg. The idea is to do what feels OK to the ankle. One of the greatest games of our childhoods was swimming without moving one or another body part. Swimming uses all muscle groups and can be as gentle or as vigerous as you want so it offers cardio benefits and builds lung capacity. Because the water supports you it is unlikely but certainly possible to strain anything while swimming. Take a break and float if you get tired or your leg hurts. If you can walk to the water or get there in a wheel chair or on crutches you can swiim. Till you get used to it choose places with a lifeguard and swim with a buddy in places that are designated as safe and frree of boat traffic.

Yes you can. I might not try to kick, and try to use a pool booey (you place it inbetween your thighs) and you just swim with your arms! it will help with some cardio!
