Drive without the base for a car seat?

  • Is it legal to drive and not have a base installed for your carseat? I dont want to take the base on an upcoming trip .... so if its legal - i just want to take the actual car seat. ...show more

  • Answer:

yes you can use the car seat without the base. I'm assuming it's an infant seat. The base is mostly for convenience. Your manual will tell you how to properly install it with the seat belt and it is legal to install it this way.

If the base is just a convenience thing and not part of a safety factor for the child then setting him/her in the car seat without the base is not a problem. As long as the child is properly and safely restrained then there is NO PROBLEM.

It's not a matter of legality; it's a matter of safety. Child seats, and I assume that's what you are referring to, are tested and certified as a complete system. Without the base to support the seat, you might just as well toss your kid in the seat without strapping him or her in. If you are pulled over for any reason, and a cop decides to inspect your installation, you stand a good chance of getting busted if the cop knows what he's doing.

If you are a person that will take chances for you slipping the you can drive on a car and you get into an accident then you might go flying out of the window of the car.

I do not understand. Do you want to take this trip sitting on......the carpet? To have the seat sitting there loose, not bolted down?

Many infant car seats come with a leave-in-car base, but only a few of these car seats can be used in a vehicle without the base. Most infant car seats come with a detachable base that can be separately installed on the rear seat of a vehicle, allowing the infant seat to be transferred with ease. http://products.howstuffworks.com/car-seats-buying-guide.htm Florida state law requires children under age 5 to be protected with an approved and properly used child restraint device. For children under 3, Florida law requires that they be in a separate car seat or a car seat that is integrated into the vehicle. For children ages 4 and 5, a separate car seat, integrated car seat or seat belt may be used. http://www.infant-car-seats.com/states/car-seats-laws-Florida.html
