Why can not ambitious and capable director make the TV serials on Mahabharata, if it is too epic to be captured in a movie of 3 parts?

Today we see some of the wonderfully directed and managed films and TV on great stories, which can be fiction like Avatar or based on novel like LOTR and GOT. There is no doubt about the popularity on an Indian epic Mahabharata, as it is well known for being World's largest epic. If directors like Danny Boyle can make contemporary films like Slumdog... then why cannot ambitious directors like Steven Spielberg, Christopher_Nolan, and james cameron try to venture on this Project

B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat TV series was awesome. Didn't you see / like it? And there's a new one starting on Star Plus I guess. Let's wait for the initial episodes to decide whether the Director is capable or not. :P
