How did Chaman Day start at ECE NITK? How did it get its name?

On Chaman Day, ECE students engage in a fancy dress of sorts, and come to class in quirky attires often based on film/comic characters. We are looking at possibly featuring the best answer to this question as a part of NITK lore in the next edition of the college magazine. Hence, it would be great if someone (especially the alumni) could provide descriptive answers here.

Here is my conspiracy theory :-P Maybe the laundry guy misplaced all the clothes. There was an announced surprise test that day. The ingenuous ec students made up a day just so that they can go to class in shorts.

Thanks for the A2A. ECE students of NITK have been famed to be the tortured souls of our college. You might occasionally see one smile or even laugh but you feel a little sad deep inside knowing that they will go back to their scheduled torture pretty soon.
