How can I take the RSS feed of another person's blog to create a Twitter feed that I can follow?
-
A blog that I'd like to keep track of doesn't have an associated Twitter account, or any other feed other than its RSS feed. Is there some way that I can take the blog's RSS feed and produce a Twitter feed from it that I could follow? Furthermore, would there be any sort of legal barriers to manipulating this information in such a way if I did this myself?

Answer:
This should be fairly straightforward. All you need is a Twitter account (you can create a new one with an unused email address), the blog's RSS feed and an account at IFTTT (If This, Then That) http://ifttt.com (there are other ways of doing it I'm sure but this is the easiest that I know of). There are a number of ready-made 'recipes' at IFTTT and a suitable one for this purpose would be RSS to Twitter, eg https://ifttt.com/recipes/5539-rss-twitter It's over a year since I've done this but hopefully this is correct... Log in to the Twitter account you want to use Log in to IFTTT Either adapt the recipe above or start from scratch: Click on 'create' at the top of the page to start, then click on the blue 'this' that appears to set the trigger (which is the RSS feed), go through the process and choose the relevant Twitter as the channel so that it posts a tweet whenever a new item is added to the feed. I've done this for a secondary Twitter account @psci_com which publishes a tweet every time someone posts a message to the psci-com mailing list (it's for science communicators). I adapted the recipe above. Can't think of any legal barriers to this as it's a public feed and that's pretty much what RSS is for. Doesn't hurt to be polite and ask (I suppose they can switch the feed off if they don't like it). You could also ask if the blog owner has thought of using Twitter themselves - it may be that they don't want to, or just don't really know how to set it up.
