What is the payment process between online platforms where you book a service and the service providers?

  There are usually two models at play for something like this. Model 1: As you describe. The site collects all the funds. They then typically take a % cut and disburse the final amount to the actual provider of the funds. Model 2: If the sellers (or providers of a service) already have credit card processing in place then they might try and process directly against the ultimate service providers merchant account. Here they would build an integration to support those choices. A third wrinkle to consider. Depending on the service, often times the customer isn't charged until they consume the service. The original site might capture a card and authorize it to know that it's good. They then treat that like a "sale" When the customer shows up the following week for their Spa or Tour etc they present their card there and that's when the actual charge happens. In this case 95% of the charges are never really handled by the original site. The only challenge here is if the customer is a no show. Then the service calls this booking site and says "Hey, your referral never showed. I need you to charge them the $50 no show fee and pay me"  This is super risky though as this type of charge is much more likely to be disputed and chargebacked. So if you run the charge against your merchant account, keep $5 and then pay out the site $45 for the no show (just an example) the risk you run is in 21 days the person sees their statement and hits you with a chargeback. So running it against the actual merchant's account is always the best thing if you can manage it. For Model 1 I think someone like Balanced Payments might be a good place to start. They really focus in on marketplace's. Braintree is also another service to consider as their gateway can get to many backend merchant accounts.  For Model 2 my company Spreedly might help.
