Look in your local yellow pages under Social & Human Services & Organizations. It may take a few calls, but after explaining what and why you are doing this, everyone will be happy to guide you to the right place. Calling your local police stations' regular number may also help with locations. Some may say that they do not need anymore volunteers, yet a lot of the time a few volunteers have to pull out at the last minute for personal reasons. "IF" you cannot find anything, call around to womens or other shelters or something similar. I am sure if you arrange it and call ahead of time you can drop off some turkey sandwhiches & cookies in lunch bags for their next day, or that a few trays of baked treats would be appreciated for dessert with some new childrens DVDs for the womens & children shelter . There is no such thing as "too much food"! Good for you!

contact some other place or google local soup kitchens.
It's admirable that you two would consider doing this instead of having a family thanksgiving. Senior centers or retirement homes may also be in need of help. It is kind of late to volunteer as most probably have all their spots filled. Keep calling, someone may still need some help. If googling local soup kitchens and homeless shelters hasn't helped you, maybe just have Thanksgiving with just the two of you. My fiance' and I are going to be the only ones here at our Thanksgiving too. It's our first one we've actually had together so we are going to enjoy it being just us. You could also google tent cities in your area. There are alot of homeless people creating their own places to live because of the economy. If you find any, I am sure they would also love it if you dropped them off some food. You could also donate food to the shelters even if they don't need any volunteers this year. I think it was a wonderful idea you two had! God bless you!

I am not sure where you are but I know that a lot of churches do these sort of things. You don't have to be religious or a member of their chuch but that is the place that I would be starting. Do you have the salvation army in the States? Here in Australia they would be the best people to contact. Also what are the local charity organisations??? Especially homeless charities.
