Does anyone know a good program (similar to the peace corps) that can be done during a year off before college

I am looking for a program that is very hands on and doesn't cost an insane amount of money. The peace corps doesn't usually take 18 year olds and its two years but if anyone ...show more

Answer:
There are a number of programs that are in cities in the United States. You live in a group house and work for a non-profit organization that helps the poor. You get health insurance and transportation money, and maybe a stipend only $100 a month to spend, if that: but you have a house and roommates and food (mostly vegetarian). It's a great learning experience in how to live with other people, and you get a year of work experience. There are a bunch of these groups, they're called Volunteer Corps, and they're usually part of a church. There's Avodah for people who are Jewish. In Washington, DC, it's called Trinity Episcopal Church. You can also check with the Lutheran Volunteer Corps, the Methodist Volunteer Corps, the Capuchin Volunteer Corps, and the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Most of the kids are college grads, so you should ask if they'll take you when you're younger. Good for you!

I second the AmeriCorps nod. I am currently in AmeriCorps, working with Habitat for Humanity. If you want to build homes, this one's for you.. and there's a lot of Habitat affiliates that take AmeriCorps members (even Anchorage, AK!). There's a lot of different types of jobs in AmeriCorps, like state parks work, office stuff, etc. Basically, any non-profit can apply for a grant to hire AmeriCorps, so lots of variety. One of AmeriCorps' popular programs is called *NCCC, which has teams that move around a region for a year. One of my current roommates did that for a year. AmeriCorps doesn't cost anything to join, you just have to move to wherever your job is (and you can apply for stuff in your hometown if you don't want to move). You get a living stipend (mine is about $10,000, but our housing is free), and at the end of the year, you get the AmeriCorps education award (about $4600), which can be used for school. If you happen to be a Christian, there are many opportunities in missions. You might want to check out YWAM (youth with a mission).
