American Accent Changed? How has the American English evolved in the 20th century?

  • Answer:

There is no "american accent" We have many many accents. Think of it this way: *every* dialect has a different accent. Louisiana's Cajun is different than the creole accent you see in the exact same geographical area. There are many websites who document the dialects down to state differences... see here: http://web.ku.edu/idea/northamerica/usa/usa.htm I suspect you are reacting to changes in voice in cinema. This has nothing to do with accents in the population - they simply used a different type of acting and actor back then. Many of the actors used in early cinema came directly from stage - the acting was more over the top. The years you suggest are when the studio system dominated American film. Film from that era was more homogeneous as they only cast a certain type. It is more about where you have heard the accents than how it is in reality. No change has made my accent closer to a southern drawl or a Texas twang - Im from California - we certainly feel we dont have an accent....except if you are from a beach city. :P

i believe that with networking and nationwide news coverage, corporations are seeking spokespeople with 'midwest' accents. they are easy to understand, seeing as they have no decipherable region, such as the drawl associated with the southern staes, or the distinct Newfoundlander accent. a good example of this is the Australian accent, which was originally a conglomerate of British, Irish and Scottish, with a little native mixed in. they all seemed to mesh together and create a distinct accent that we like to associate with crocodile hunting.

American English has morphed into a more "Queen's English" because American's, who use chat language when conversing online, are more aware of proper English when conversing traditionally. Good Luck....
