What does it take to become a surgeon?

What highschool classes do I need to take to become a brain surgeon?

  • I need this answer because I am doing a project in my biology(10th) class! About medical careers and I picked a Brain Surgeon. Please answer I need this answer badly.

  • Answer:

The real answer is absolutely anything. It completely does not matter. If you like art, take art. If you like science, take science. NOBODY except the admissions people for your undergraduate college are going to look at or care what you took in high school You just have to do well enough to get into college. I know a physician who has a GED, no kidding. I know a neurosurgeon who used to be a teacher. That's probably not what your teacher wants to see, though. So, I'd go with the "take a bunch of science and math" answers. You certainly won't go wrong with that. BTW, the real name for a Brain Surgeon is a Neurosurgeon. They work on more than just brains, and do a lot of spinal cord and spine work in addition to heads.

Hey there! Wow that's neat I also want to be a neurosurgeon am in high school as well in the 11th grade. Courses in high school or dual enrollment class that you should take are. AP Biology AP Chemistry AP Psychology AP Calculus AB and BC AP Physics you should maybe try dual enrollment, I don't know if they have it where you live, I'm taking it and its practically doing and finishing your bachelors at the same time you graduate from high school. You should talk to your counselor about it. Some classes you can think of are: All 3 courses of Biochemistry Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Psychology- Physiological Psychology, Growth and Development and Human Sexuality Anatomy/Physiology I and II Physics with Calculus Applications Microbiology I and II Pharmacology courses As many Neuroscience courses available. I've taken those and they're really fun, see if you can talk to your counselor about it, keep up your GPA [3.5+] and kick *** in the SAT's and ACT's, good luck and best wishes =]!

Funny that they would ask about high school classes and not undergraduate classes. But (my answer): Take AP science courses: AP bio, chem, physics- this will give you a sense of the amount of work and material covered in a 100-200 level science course- which are the prereqs for medical school. ( All intros to bio, chem, and physics; maybe a calc or stats class and a year of any english classes) I would take pre-calculus, no need to go higher, because I would take pre-calc again in college. So it balances itself out- I took Pre-cal and Stats in my freshman year and calc 1 & 2 sophomore year. Also, if you can take an anatomy class- not for the material, but for the amount of material they have you MEMORIZE- a SMALL taste of the amount required to memorize in the years forthcoming. Hope that helps

There are no high school pre-reqs unless the undergraduate college you go to says you need them. To become a brain surgeon you must go through undergrad completing the required classes for the specific medical school you want to go to, then go through med school and residency. high school recommendations : biology, chemistry, physics - because these will help in undergrad undergrad recommendations : *sometimes necessary* Bio 1 and 2 with labs Gen Chem 1 and 2 with labs Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 with labs Physics 1 and 2 with a lab Calculus 1 maybe statistics things like that.

As many Sciences as you can get: Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, ( if offered) . Mathmatics- more to teach logical reasoning than anything else. You will learn Biostatistics etc. in Medical School. A good math background would help. Just be sure to do well, so you get into a good University. You have to be willing to work hard enough to hold a 3.8+ average to have a chance. Lots of good competition for Med School slots.

To become a Brain Surgeon first you need to become a doctor (family Physician) then an a specialist. So inorder to become a doctor you take the following courses; Grade 12 Biology, Grade 12 Chemistry, Grade 12 English and Calculus Physics is also recommended.

You would take the difficult math courses , chemistry, and biology. This is the same no matter what kind of doctor you want to be.
