    The best way is to meet the buyer at his/her bank and watch as they get a cashiers' check made out to you. Or have them write you a personal check and go to their bank to cash it. I would not recommend getting that much money in cash.

if they take off and the check is bad - you call the police and claim it on your insurance and they get caught and in trouble. If it's a big bank and it's a bank check that should be ok.

if you get a bank check (from a bank you are familiar with or heard of) or cashier's check it means that the money has been drawn out of their account to pay the check. although, they can make a stop payment on the check, it is very unlikely. a certified personal check can be forged.
