How much did you have left over from financial aid?

How am I supposed to live on what's left of my financial aid award?

  • Answer:

You need to budget. My freshman year I lived of 200 a month (provided by my mom) because I didn't work. You can't live like you did at home; buying clothes every weekend, eating out all the time. Do you have a meal plan throuhg your school? There's food, all you need form the store is snacks (Walmart's the cheapest). Buy non-parishable items in bulk before you leave for school, that way you have a bunch of stuff already. Anytime you get change, SAVE THE QUARTERS for laundry. Oh, and pop bottles will be your best friends, so start saving them now. You could look into getting a 3rd shift gig, like at the front dest of your dorm or a janitorial position somewhere. It'll be hard, but, eh, such is life.

Unless you have bills for other expenses, then live frugally. How often do you need new clothes, if you already have clothes? Your food - you're paying room and board, so eat in the dining hall and only treat yourself to a meal out on a very rare occasion. Also - can't you work on only Saturday? That should add a couple hundred dollars to your monthly income. Don't get credit cards...if any part of your financial aid award is loans, you're already in debt.

Why is getting a job not possible? NO JOB can fit in? WalMart's are usually open 24 hrs... SURELY they can find some hours for you. I work 4 jobs, my dear... FIND the time!

learn to live on that money or find a way to work, or borrow money from somewhere else to cover the rest (maybe get a relative to cosign on a secondary education loan). That or get a better schedule next semester. Maybe spread out the classes with lab schedules. I was a biochem major as an undergrad and in my last year I managed to pull down 18-20 units a semester while working a 40+ hour job and maintaining a 3.9 GPA, so I know it is possible. You just need to be prepared to have zero social life (in which case, since your room and board are covered already, you won't notice the lack of money).
