Lots. I have been doing this a long time, and at various stores and levels. One mistake that seems to be prominent in our business is for guys to continually move store to store. If you do that you can't build a clientele, repeat, and referral business. PLus, your integrity is shot to hell. How can a guy spend 3 months telling folks that Fords are the greatest thing, then switch to a Chevy store and trash Ford? Always ask questions. LISTEN to what your customers are telling you. Take a real interest in finding hte vehicle that meets all of their needs within their budget. too often a salesperson decides that Mr. Jones really needs a Miata, and by golly thats what he will get. When Mr. Jones has already said he has 3 kids and likes to go camping. Listen to what they want and need. I said it twice because its that important. Only after you have asked all the questions and gathered information should you present a car. They don't care how much you know, until they know that you care. Know your product. I have been embarassed to see people who work for me and did not know how to fold down the seats in a Tahoe. Or open the midgate on an Avalanche. take time each day to learn about a vehicle in your inventory. Learn the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, and how it compares to your competition. Follow up religiously. Call the people who bought cars from you and make sure they are happy. Make sure you answer any questions they have. Do not leave them high and dry after you have made a sale. Remember that buying a car is a huge decision for people. They need to feel comfortable with their choices. Part of that is your follow through. Do not be afraid to ask for referrals. Your customers who bought from you have friends and family who need a car too. Talk to the clerk at the supermarket, and the receptionist at the doctor's office. lastly - and to me most importantly - always be honest with your customers. If you don't know an answer, say so, and find out for them. Don't promise anything you cannot deliver. Don't tell them a car has something when it doesnt. Don't mislead or lie to any of your customers. Sure, you can promise the sun and moon in order to make a big deal once. But it will come back to bite you on the *** a thousand times over. And, that customer will never send you a referral, and never come back to you again. Good luck

I was a car salesman for a few months. Here are a few pointers: - Be polite but don't be fake. Customers are going from dealer to dealer and its obvious when a salesman puts on a fake Hello Sir! Tell me what we can do for you today. - 90% of the time the customer will find the car that they want. When they are walking the lot there will be the one car that stands out to them. That is the car that you need to sell them .. not any other car. Don't try switching them from what they have initially chosen. - When a customer asks for the price be upfront with the asking price for the car. Do not just go ahead and start making deductions because you know in the end you can sell it for a lower price. The customer will feel better about an end price that they have worked for. (Although there are a rare few that know what they want and how much they will pay and therefore don't feel the need to do much negotiation since they know what the price should be.) - Price isn't everything. You can take the focus off the price by throwing in a free warranty package etc. (if the dealer offers it.) instead of offering 500 dollars off (which doesn't impress the customer half as much as a year of not having to worry about repairs.) Hope these few pointers help. There are a couple of articles online that alert buyers to some of these dealer tactics. By learning how to be a better buyer, you learn how to be a better salesperson. Customer satisfaction is always #1.

""Firstly you must be a total unconscionable SOB. You are not there to satisfy the customer. That is the Service Departments job. You are there so that the Dealer Principal can turn a profit and you can put meat on your plate. Never, ever, answer a direct inquiry. Always answer a question with a question until you can learn how deep your customers pockets are. Your clients have already been told that car salesmen are crooks and thieves. If they leave the Dealership thinking otherwise you haven't done your job. People lie and car shoppers are the worst of the bunch. They are like hyenas. They will play you like a fiddle and at the first sign of weakness will crush your throat with their teeth. If your client has no credit sign him up with the 35% lenders. Why should you care if he will be paying 3 times what the car is worth. And if he can't keep up the payments, so what. You have your commission and you get to sell the car again. And remember, if you sell the cheapest car out in the corner of the lot you will be laughed out of the business. That's the car we use to lure the suckers in.""

The first requirement is to ensure that your parents were not married, then you have to lie through your teeth.

Be nice, joke a little but not in a nasty or rude way by any means. Don't ask where they work, or how much they can afford... Let them look at the cars they want to!! I guess just listen to them..

You picked a bad time to think about becoming a car salesman. Car sales are dropping, which puts salesman out of work. Get a 2nd job delivering pizzas instead.

Sell your soul. Just kidding... You have to be pretty charming and be able to retain every bit of information about what someone is asking for. Be comfortable with possibly spending hours with a stranger, making them feel relaxed and all that the whole time. Dress nicely.
