When renewing a passport, does the post office keep the expired copy or does it return it with the new copy?

Answer:
You receive your expired passport back. Passports provide a record of where you’ve been. Each time you visit a new country, you get a new stamp on your passport. The US Department of State understands that passports mean a lot to people, so after you renew your passport, they’ll cancel the old one and send it back to you.

Im way cooler in real life.
It will send your expired copy back to you separately from your new copy. The Passport office will clip it..I think to stop it from being misused, mistaken for your current passport.

I don't know but doubt very seriously they would give you back two IDs. The DMV doesn't give you two driver's licenses.
