Is "Open University" any good?

Does the Open University have a good reputation?

  • Answer:

Yes, and getting better all the time. with Alevels becoming pretty meaningless and every tom dick and harry getting a degree, employers look for people who have studied a more challenging degree like the OU degree, i.e. it's not a matter of getting a couple of alevels and then getting drunk for 3 years and scraping a 2:2 - but a OU degree shows you can pass at a higher rate, be disciplinted and committed, and work flexibly over a sustained period. OU degrees are becoming better in reputation the more the traditional system loses credibility.

I have qualifications from three Universities. The last one was from the OU which I did whilst still in full time employment. It does require much discipline. The tutorials and residential courses helped.

yep. my dad did a degree whilst working full-time. Took him 6 years though with a lot of dedication and hard work. Matthew Kelly and Lenny Henry graduated from the OU recently

Yes it does, aslong as your disciplined to work. Open university does exactly what it sais on the tin.

Yes very good reputation, it isn't what it used to be, watching a bearded chemisty nerd on tv at 3am in the morning! Look at all the programmes that are OU progs today - very good - Coast, a child of our time, more or less, lots of very good BBC tv and radio stuff, and also supported very well by tutorials and residentials now. OU has an excellent ethos re access to education and isnt' at all snobby like some universities, it genuinely believes education should be available for all. I would be proud to have a degree from there, for for it!

Yes very good, if you are considering studying with the OU, be prepared to work hard but be rewarded with a degree with an excellent reputation. Very highly regarded by employers looking for more mature staff with some experience as well as quals rather than recent grads from traditional universities.

Excellent, as previous people have said, OU degrees expect a lot more therefore people with those degrees are more hightly regarded often, then students with 'regular' degrees. It would be the top of my list if I went back to study.

Yes very good, the material is interesting and uses the latest technology and there is also lots of tutorial and residential support as well as distance tools. It has higher achievement grades (i.e. it's harder to get a first at the OU than a more traditional uni) so has a higher standard, and also requires the discpline of open learning which impresses a lot of employers, and it also means you can be flexible to fit in studies with other comittments, you also have to be determined and have patience if part time i.e. studying over a long period so shows committment. Overall I would prefer to employ someone with an OU degree above any other, so yes I'd say the reputation is excellent!

It's the UK's largest university so is obviously popular but I don't seem to hear of many people who claim to have studied at the OU.

I should think so. I did a Masters degree in IT with the OU and it was the hardest work I've ever done! Most people seem to agree, as the other answerers have said, that because students at the OU are entirely self-motivated then the degrees have a good value.
