  Regarding notecards or memorizing out of the book, that's more of a personal choice. I tend to use notecards cause when I write stuff down it helps me remember it. I think studying in groups is really helpful especially in AP classes. If I didn't get how to do a certain problem I'd always go to my teacher and he'd help me out so that was awesome. For Spanish I feel like it's more of memorization rather than having a deep understanding of the concept. Sure, you have to know when to use which tense, but once you get that, it's pure memorization. I've been taking Spanish for several years and repetition was always my best study tool. Good luck!
