Is it better to go to graduate school right after college or get a job first?

  • Answer:

Speaking from prior experience, here is my answer. If you have the opportunity to go to college, do it as soon as possible. It is very easy to get caught up in the working world. If you are in the working world for a while, going to school will be difficult without a solid focus and life plan.

Ideally it would be better for you to get work experience before graduate school, especially if you seek employment outside academia. Having said that, I would recommend going to graduate school immediately since you are still in the student mind frame.

Keep on going. Every semester you're out of school, its just that much harder to get back in the swing of things once you do go back. Plus, you have other distractions from the outside world which will take away from study and research time. And, you can probably get a job as a graduate teaching assistant or other type of assistantship which will pay for just about everything but your books and give you enough to live on per month....not much more than that, but you can get by on it. Good Luck!

my opinion: first of all, if you want to get an mba and really want the very best of opportunities to come to you after you graduate, make sure you don't just pick any school that offers you admission - pick one of the best ones, i.e., top ten in the nation (mba school programs are ranked). getting in is not going to be easy, but it is going to pay off big time. one thing i have seen in many is that many think they'll get to grad school later on, and they take up a job right after school. but only few will come around to finally go to grad school - the ones that are able to do that are extremely motivated, or, they get their company to pay for school ( it is expensive to get through an mba in a top notch school). once you are earning real money after school, it is easy to get distracted from plans of going back to grad school, as grad school is going to be financially tight. so, if money is not an issue right now, and you can work your *** off to get to one of the top ten mba programs in the nation, i would suggest go for grad school. if money is an issue right now, but you feel you are motivated enough, maybe go for a job, get a few years of experience under your belt, then see if the company pays for the mba program - in many cases they do. but again, pick only one of the top schools for getting your mba, not just any school. another thing, if you are to go for your mba right away, make sure you pick a more general mba program, not a specialized one. also, talk to career counseling at your school now and just see what their input is - you may find it helpful. good luck.

Go for the degree. A BA will get you next to nothing except $3,000 more in salary. If you can, get into a program that has you doing something real for industry as a part of your Master's program. I had two friends. Both gradauted UCLA with computer degrees. One went to work for B of A at $23,500 and then moved to another compny. The othe went to Geo. Washington U and got his MA and in his last year he put together the intranet for a US Government agency, working with under gradautes. That was his first credit. When he got out of school he started making $50K immeadately, has about a dozen or more books in print (he's a Perl Guru) and is now a consultant to six or so different companies.

GO TO COLLEGE! Life happens and this is the best time for you to do so. You will find out that the best job you can get with a high school diploma will relate in no way to the college degree you want to get and you get experience in your field DURING your college career doing internships and things of that nature. Without the education under your belt, you will find out very quickly that you've wasted time and the opportunity may have passed or might not be as available to you. College, then job. Or even job while in college, but not the other way around!

Depends -- how much money do you have? How in debt are you? Do you have a chance at a good job right now in marketing that could make your MBA easier (and that could perhaps help pay for the MBA)? How much real world experience do you have right now? If you leave school will you go back? Personally, I went to tech school right out of high school, then worked for a few years, then went to university (where I kicked butt, because of the time I had spent in the workforce), now I have been working for a few years again, and am now starting my Masters program. I found the time in the workforce gives a perspective to the education that I would not have had otherwise. It also gave me the strength to go to my professors and fight for grades which were unfair (such as receiving a final mark of a B after getting all As in a class) or having the courage to debate a point in class with them. I remembered that I was PAYING them to teach me, and that they damned well better teach me something, but at the same time, since I was PAYING (and the time in the workforce really gave me the value of the dollar) I was going to make the most of it. Something I did not have when I went to tech school right out of high school.

Based on my experience I would get a job first. You do get some experience if you're lucky and if not you get so sick of working at McDonalds that grad school seems like a walk in the park. Good luck!

never put off till tommrow what you can do today, if you really want to keep up with the school go now, cause you might not get a chance to do it later.

For Marketing Management, you should get the MBA first.
