What is the difference between a bar, a tavern, a pub, and a saloon?

What's the difference between a bar, a tavern, a club, and a saloon?

  • Answer:

From my "non anglosaxon" point of view: bar = a place where anyone can walk into from the street to get a coffee, a drink, make a phone call, maybe grab some quick bite like a sandwich, peanuts etc. Often you can get cigarettes too. tavern = this name comes from the italian "taverna" for a low class place where you can eat. Nowadays they would be kind of restaurants with "retro/rustic" furniture. club = this is either a place where you must be a member of, or a public place that opens at night where you dance and you can also drink and pick up women. saloon = is where cowboys used to "wet their drinking holes". The American equivalent to the Italian "taverna".

SOme would say nothing but alot has to do with the size, if food is serve, the type of entertainment and if it is a full bar or limited, all vary slightly, a saloon is something from the old west and pioneer days and is not used as much now a days, a bar would be a bit more upscale with cocktails, a tavern would be a smaller rougher workman's beer hangout, a club would be a bar with a limited menu and entertainment.
