What does database developers actually do?

As (web & mobile) application developers, what are the trending libraries (js...), framework, tools and database (noSql or Relational) that will be dominating the market for years to come?

  • As application developer what should I concentrate on for years to come? I am hearing about phonegap, node.js, mongodb, hadoop, backbone,...what is the future?

  • Answer:

If you follow the trends you will find JavaScript and asynchronous programming to be the next dominant thing. Hence node js, one of the first server side JavaScript web servers. JS is good for companies because now their front end developers can work on back end code too. The other rising trend is RESTful API programming. Every web application in the future will be developed with APIs in mind first. This is because API layers can improve underlying system architecture and also because the top platforms are available through APIs, Facebook, Twitter, Salesforce, Google Maps... That's convenient because if you read my first comment, JavaScript and Node JS are uniquely suited for building rock solid RESTful APIs and front end JavaScript is great for consuming it. Heck I'm even pretty sure the phone gap library you mentioned is based on JavaScript.
