Has anyone ever done a road trip from Bangalore to Delhi? If yes, what route you took, how much time and how was the experience?

  • Answer:

Three of us (I and my friends) did a Bangalore - Delhi Road trip in Jan 2013, spanned over 6 days. We were 2 drivers and one photographer :). We traveled Bangalore- Mangalore - Udupi - Gokarna - Karwar - Goa - Tarkarli - Kolhapur- Pune - Mumbai- Ahemedabad - Udaipur - Jaipur - Delhi. Note: Bold are the places, where we stayed for the night. Non bold are the places, we visited for few hours for lunch/dinner breaks. I haven't personally done Blr - Del and cannot directly answer your question. However a good resource which I highly recommend and personally use while planning my road trips is TeamBHP. It's India's largest community for car enthusiasts and their forums have a wealth of information on road conditions, good places to halt and other tips. TeamBHP is a bit selective about admitting new members but they let everyone read the posts. I have. In the opposite direction though. I drove from Delhi to Bangalore in 2010. Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Bombay-Pune-kolhapur-Hubli-Bangalore was the route I took. It took me 2 and a half days. My night halts on night 1 was Ahmedabad and on Night 2 was Kohlapur. Excellent - divided- roads almost all through made for pleasant driving. I imagine roads are even.better now with 4 laning done almost everywhere.

My friend and I did a road trip from Bangalore-Delhi in 2013 March end. We picked Bangalore-Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Udaipur-Jaipur-Delhi route. Most of the route is really great, well maintained roads, scenic views and lots of toll booths. I think most of the time we drove above or around 120 kmph. We wrapped up Pune-Mumbai Expressway in just below 50 mins. An average speed of 80-90 kmph can be maintained most of the time. We covered almost 800 kms on first two days and approx 950 kms on the third day. On slower pace, trip can be organized with smaller legs. Earlier we were planning for a 4 day trip but we improvised on the way, and finished in 3 days. We had our first stop at Pune, second one at Ahmedabad and made a stretched run on the third day. We had 30-45 mins breaks for breakfast and lunch, and drove in 2-3 hrs turns, i.e. 5-6 hrs of continuous drive. We picked Pune and Ahmedabad as our overnight stops because these are big cities. But we also lost some time in the evening to find lodging and food, and also because we had to enter the city leaving the highway. These things can be planned better in advance. We faced most of the traffic when we entered Pune and Ahmedabad. Also, there comes Mumbai after Pune, and we had to go through the city, so that was also time consuming. There was a patch of 20 km in udaipur which was very slow due to truck traffic. And finally the worst part came in the last leg of Jaipur to Delhi. I don't know if this was regular but we faced highly packed jam of trucks for more than 100km and it was really painful. We reached Delhi almost 11pm in night, 4-5 hrs late than we were expecting. Overall our trip was more of a run from Bangalore-Delhi, So didn't do much fun except some really fast driving, on some of the most beautiful and best roads of India. We touched 160 kmph at few places. But that is not really advised as safety should always be the higher priority. We just wanted to test the top speed of our Maruti Swift. However good Indian roads are, there is always a chance of getting one occasional bump or something unexpected at places, so driving should be careful all the time. It's better to drive with minimum of two drivers. Get your car inspected before the start of the journey. If you like driving, this trip will be fun, you can enjoy different type of food on the way, and there will be lots of places to get some good snaps.
