What is really Vitamin E?

What is a good multivitamin that does not contain Vitamin E?

  • My doctor says I am allergic to Vitamin E but I see all multivitamans contain vitamin E. Are there any multivitamins which do not contain E?

  • Answer:

How exactly was it established that you are allergic to "vitamin E"? Which products were used, what were the symptoms, and how was the connection made? Note that there are at least 8 forms of naturally occurring vitamin E, and at least 1 form of synthetic vitamin E. If you did have symptoms, it is more likely that they were from the synthetic form (dl alpha tocopherol). In this hypothetical case, you'll just have to try a multivitamin that lists its vitamin E as being "d alpha tocopherol" (if not listed as "full-spectrum"). In this case, it must definitely not be listed with "dl". The company Swanson Vitamins sells some multivitamins that contain the "d" and not the "dl" form of alpha tocopherol of vitamin E. I'm sure there are many others that fit the bill too.

As Anthony said, I agree that it is very difficult to identify an allergy to all 8 forms of Vitamin E. So I would suggest, if you are detected allergic to one form of Vitamin E, you may try to consume the other naturally-occuring forms. Since I am a herbalist, I would preach a herbal supplement. Shilajit is one naturally occuring substance which has been known in Ayurveda to be a rich source of Vitamins. Clinical Support Morning and Evening Formula by VitaMedica, Inc. is a Vit E-free formulation. However you may want to consult with a competent nutritionist or do a little 'heavy lifting' on your own by doing some research into just what vitamins that you actually need to supplement with and construct your own modular system or regimen. Although I thoroughly believe in the art and science of supplementation, I'm not a big fan of indiscriminate multi-vitamin dosing. Multi Vitamin vendors tend to cater to people's laziness and need for reassurance by selling them "insurance" in the form of an all-in-one. This kind of cheap fix may actually backfire, if people don't feel the need to take care in making dietary choices because they've "got their multi." A few conditions or dietary regimens might benefit (seniors who might otherwise forget to take pills if they have a lot of them to take, calorie restricted or ketogenic diets, etc.) but more often than not, this shotgun approach doesn't make people any healthier or keep them from poorer health.
