How do I embed .srt subtitles on a video if I have a Mac?

How do I hardcode or embed subtitles (.srt or .ssa) to video files (.avi or .mkv) on Mac?

  • Some Details: I used Handbrake, but only the "Default" option appears, i can't select "Burned in", which i'm guessing is how you hardcode the subtitles.. i read online to use .ssa files, so i tried that, but Handbrake won't let me select the file.

Okay, I read http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/movies-video/236226-problem-burning-subtiles-into-file.html that the latest version of Handbrake doesn't support AVIs, at least for this "Burned In" feature.  The recommendation is to download http://www.filehippo.com/download_handbrake/4756/.  However, I think the SSA support didn't arrive until 0.9.5.  So I would think you can't use Handbrake to burn SSA to an AVI.  Probably can soft-embed an SRT to an AVI using the older version though. And also, just to make sure we have the terminology right... did you really want to "burn in" the subtitles to the video track, so you can't disable them?  (I believe this is what "burn-in" would do)  Or did you want them on a separate track, so, in the video player, you can go to the subtitle menu and enable/disable them?  Without burning-in, you might have to manually enable the subtitles in your video player to see them, but they would be still there. That all said, submerge might be better, as suggested :)  It has a very reassuring web page that says it can do everything with hard-coded subtitles, including supporting AVI files.

As we know, MKV is a container format that can include video, audio, subtitle and other information. If your MKV videos already contain subtitle track, you can always show it in the compatible media player KMPlayer or VLC Media Player. But if you’ve your MKV video doesn’t come with subtitles file, you need to add subtitles to your MKV video first.  If you want to know a step-by-step guide how to attach subtitles to a MKV video, click http://video-playback-tips.com/adding-subtitles-to-a-mkv-file/.

Step one: Download subtitles filesSo, if you’ve got videos that don’t have any subtitles at all, then you can free download kinds of SRT/ASS/SSA subtitles files from the Internet. Here, I’ll give you[http://device-camcorder-tips.blogspot.com/2013/07/best-subtitle-download-sites.html](http://device-camcorder-tips.blogspot.com/2013/07/best-subtitle-download-sites.html )  or you can simply check through a search engine. Subtitle file formats are typically found in .srt, .ass, .ssa.Step two: Add subtitles to video fileTo add subtitles to video file can be fairly easy and it is not as difficult as you imagine. The file format of the video usually doesn’t matter when it comes to adding subtitles, but naturally, playback is another story depending on how and where you want to watch it.So here I strongly recommend you [http://www.multipelife.com/video-converter-ultimatehttp://www.multipelife.com/video-converter-ultimate http://www.multipelife.com/video-converter-ultimate. With it, you can not only add subtitles like .ass/.srt to your MKV or AVI file, but also add subtitles to other formats, such as mp4, mov, h.265 etc. What is more, you can also convert you MKV/AVI file to MP4 format, which is more compatible than MKV/AVI for mainstream devices.[here](http://media-playback.jimdo.com/2015/12/08/add-subtitle-to-mkv/) is the steps.

First of all, you should find the suitable subtitle. It will provide you subtitles in multiple languages for the most popular movies and TV films. Here the subtitles are packed with Winzip, unzip it you will get subtitles in SRT format. Enter the movie title in the Search field and choose subtitle in the desired language.Secondly, you need a powerful third-party program to assits you attach these subtitles to MKV/AVI Videos. Here Brorsoft http://www.brorsoft.com/video-converter/ is just a professional tool that enables you to embed subtitles to MKV/AVI files in an effective way.Overall, it not only allows you to add subtitles to MKV, AVI but also can convert other popular formats, including WMV, VOB, FLV, MPG, etc to a proper format and then add the subtitles(*.srt and *.ass, *.ssa) to videos with ease. I didn't like some of the other answers, which led to a trial version of an overpriced software, a software that did not make it clear you were downloading a trial version. I found this link: http://features.en.softonic.com/how-to-burn-subtitles-to-a-movie-on-a-mac Those instructions involve the use of ffmpegx, which is a free software, was easy to use, and performed the task pretty quickly.
