How to find an entry level engineering job?

Would an entry-level role in project management+software engineering prepare me for a career in UX design?

  • I'm a graduate student of Human Factors and Ergonomics and I'm very interested in a career in UX design. I'm currently looking for job opportunities (my first job) to finance my studies. However, I've found that there is not a lot of entry-level vacancies in the UX field here in my locality as of the moment. But I did find an entry-level role in project management + a little bit of software engineering. Since I don't know a lot about coding yet, I'm inclined to take this first role in order to develop my coding skills as well as project management skills. Hence, would this kind of role prepare me for an eventual career in UX design? Would this be a good entry point for me? What other options should I be looking for that would lay my foundations for a career in UX? Or should I just wait until a UX vacancy comes up? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Find opportunities to really do what you intend to do. When I was at that point, I was going to bail out and study Java programming. Fortunately, I found a UX Specialist job. Looking back, after discovering how the industry works, it'd frustrate me if I took a different path. Being a UX designer in most companies (that don't fully realize the value of UX) is already hard enough. Much more challenging to practice UX if you're not being paid to do just that. It's very important that you find those opportunities that allow and even oblige you to practice it. They exist. Dig deeper.

No, it wouldn't. And besides, UX design doesn't exist. I'm going to assume you mean interaction design, and in that case only doing interaction design will prepare you to do interaction design. Take whatever job you want, but keep designing if that's what you want to do.

It will not, and by taking that job you'll only delay entry into the field you really want. Project management is a very different animal. You'll spend your days chasing after estimates and status updates, not designing, not analyzing, and not creating. You have chosen to study two fields that are very valuable and also sorely lacking from what passes for UX lately. I'd hate for the industry to waste that education on project management.Surely something must come available. Even business analysis is a much better role to get your foot in the door, if there is just nothing available as, e.g., a researcher, test facilitator, or similar roles. Business analysts usually end up having a good deal of influence on a product and even create wireframes and comps in assume companies. Start there if there's nothing else.
