  You need to major in "Music Education with a Teaching Certificate" Requirements vary state-to-state, but generally you'll need a degree in music AND a teaching certificate to land a job. Here's some stuff you can do to prepare: 1. START LEARNING PIANO. Almost all music degrees require you to pass a piano proficency test. Learn it now and avoid the struggle when you get into colege. 2. Get as good as you can on your major instrument, seriously consider private lessons. 3. Study music theory, you'll be ahead of the game when you get to collage. 4. If you play a brass or percussion instrument, march with a drum and bugle corps next summer. Even if you play a woodwind, consider learning a brass instrument and donig it anyway. You'll be an EXPERT at marching and drill. 5. Go to band camp at a collage near you with a good music program. 6. Start building a portfolio to take to your first job interview. You probably won't use much stuff from high school, but if you have a thick binder of stuff you've done, it will help in the interview, even if you don't use it. You can't wait until the end of your last semester in collage to start building one. 7. Think about joining a military band out of high school before you go to collage. You can do 5 years in the service and you'll gain TONS of exerience, discipline and leadership that you can't get from collage. You'll also get the GI bill which will virtually pay for collage. High schools will oogle after you. Just don't get married too soon and incure abunch of financial responsibilites that will prevent you from going to collage when your enlistment is up.
