Why did Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine (2013 movie) open in the summer months amongst studio blockbusters and how did it become such an indie hit in the process?
-
Normally specialty films like this open in the fall for Oscar season. Why did it open in the summer blockbuster season and how did it help or hurt its box office gross?
-
Answer:
It was to do with the fact that advertisers worked principally by word of mouth. Cate Blanchett is a popular actress, that coupled with the fact that Woody Allen himself wrote Blue Jasmine specifically for her and that she was tipped for the Oscar is more than enough for social circles to have had curiosity for it. Woody Allen had also had a string of hits, starting from Midnight in Paris, the so-so but star studded To Rome with Love, and now this, which had critics drooling.
