What is iron ore?

What is the Difference bettween Iron Ore, Iron and Steel?

  • This question is for my Science Peoject on corrosion, Someone Does any one know the difference Betttween Iron ore, Iron, and steel?

  • Answer:

Iron ore is a rock which contains high amounts of the iron bearing minerals Magnetite (Fe3O4), Haematite (Fe2O3) and limonite (Fe)(OH).H2O. Magnetite and haematite are the most used, and are found in large deposits such as in Brazil and Western Australia. It has to be refined in a blast furnace to separate the iron from the oxygen, by using coke to remove the oxygen as carbon dioxide. Iron is the metal produced from iron ore. Cast iron contains a small percentage (up to 5%) of carbon in it. Steel has had most of the carbon removed from it. Even 'high carbon' steel only has 1 - 2% carbon, and 'mild steel' (the most common type used in building, etc) is almost pure iron; with only about 0.2% carbon. Steel may have other metals added to it to give it particular properties. For example, 'stainless steel' is produced by adding about 10% chromium.

Iron ore is the raw material, the way iron is found in nature. it is most commonly iron oxide minerals mixed in with other non-ore minerals. Iron is essentially the purified result of ore processing. It is basically just metallic iron, with some impurities mixed in depending on the processing and the composition of the original ore materials. Steel is an alloy of iron with other metals such as vanadium, chromium, tungsten, that are added in secondary amounts to improve the desirable features, such as hardness, ductility, or resistance to corrosion.

Iron ore is just a rock -- in fact it would probably be hard to tell iron ore from a piece you found lying out in your backyard. It's what mines produce, and it needs to be burned to separate it into its different elements. Iron is an element. It is the purest form of the metal. Steel is mostly iron, but it is not pure iron. To make steel you must burn coke (another kind of rock) along with the iron ore. The coke adds carbon to the iron, producing steel which is stronger than pure iron.
