How do you attract bats to a new bat house?

Will a bat house attract bats and will it help with our REAL BAD mosquito problem?

  • We live in the city and our yard to unusable due to the mosquitos. Out in the country we never had a problem. There was a cave nearby with bats... and barns with barnswallows that ate ...show more

Hey there! I actually had a big problem with bats last year (I live in the sticks of Maryland). We had a colony of 300 bats living the attic of our house. Long story short, we got them removed (not killed)...we posted 3 bat houses in the backyard and they moved in. However, I don't think the "if you build it they will come" concept will work in your case. They're either there or they're not...do you see any flying around at dusk?

yes it will.....people look at bats as bad things....but they are actually good...very good....they take care of the pesky little insects......so keep the bat house....

Yes, a properly positioned and designed Bat house will attract bats however they will NOT be of much use if your mosquito problem is severe. A more practical approach to a mosquito problem would include a survey of your area for standing bodies of water i.e. a defunct swimming pool, spare tires holding water, obsolete fish tanks and bird baths holding water and your home's gutter yes, gutter. Eliminating the mosquito's breeding grounds perhaps would be the best thing for you.

yes they will help,,but doubt if you will notice the small dif. unless you get a few thousand bats,!!!

The previous owner of my house put bat houses on the trees in my backyard and got the bats established before I came. The area is quite damp and the bats are well fed. It has not cured the problem, but it is a beautiful touch of nature. Occasionally a bat will get in my house (POSTED! KEEP OUT!)..... I catch them by throwing a bed sheet over them and returning them to their own space. Good luck ! I hope you enjoy them as much as I; they are good tenants.

Yes. The best way to eliminate mosquitoes, though is to eliminate their breeding sites. they can breed in 1 cubic inch of standing water( about the same amt. that is in an ice cube). DUMP out all standing water, clean your gutters,&remove standing water in flowerpot saucers. Those mosquito dunks work really well, too, are non-toxic to people and pets and are cheap.

Get bug lights. They are so worth it, they last several years, you don't have to wait for the bats to find them, and when you knock the mosquitos out of them, the wrens have a feast without having to look!

Yes it will. Bats eat those nasty mosquitos, and you will be very thankful for building the bat house. Good thinking!

yes it will, and the bug population will certainly go down.

Yes. I've seen them work at camps. It's awesome to watch bats feeding at dusk.
