Can a very small insect (that looks like a mosquito) be harmful?

What's this big, giant flying insect that's big like a butterfly, but looks like a mosquito?

  • & they only fly around @ night where there is light, like termites? Well, 1 of those things somehow got in my house, & I almost had an anxiety attack.

  • Answer:

    dragonfly?

We call them giant mosquitos. I don't know what their technical term is for them, but they don't hurt you.

It is probably a mosquito hawk,it looks something like a mosquito but much much larger.

We call them mosquito eaters but their real name is crane fly. I believe they are quite harmless but very startling to have one run into you!

Could also be a mayfly - see link. If that's the one, then the good news for you is they have a short life cycle, and are a pollution sensitive species, indicating good water quality anywhere they live.

Hi, QQ! It's probably a crane fly (some people call them mosquito hawks). http://iz.carnegiemnh.org/cranefly/introduction.htm http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=crane+fly&search=Search If this is what it is, you shouldn't be scared of it - they love eating mosquitos! They are natural pest control. We have lots of them in NC! I agree they can seem creepy when you first see one because they are so big! I literally freaked the when I had one in my first apartment - I thought it was the biggest mosquito I'd ever seen! I ran to my neighbors and she laughed at me and told me what it was. Now I'm just creeped out by camel crickets - those things will literally chase you! (I don't think they will hurt you but they are FREAKY!!) http://bugguide.net/node/view/153 Yuck!

Daddy long-legs? (crane fly) They look like mosquitos but they're quite big. Lots of those fly around the lights in my house around this time of year.
