How to make furniture look a little antiquey and french?

How do you make a bedroom look good with old, mismatch furniture?

  • im redecorating my room and wonder if any one knows how to make it luk good??

  • Answer:

Mismatched furniture is fine! I've got mostly new bits that don't match, and i manage, but with older bits it's easier! If it's all good wood, you could strip off all the finish and stain/paint it the same colours to match? (There are companies that will "DIP" your piece to entirley strip it in one!) If not draw more attention to the mis-match! Make it look Eclectic, add an old mirror above draws to give a dresser effect!! Get a patchwork bed spread to join things together too!!

Here is what I've found best to renew a room. Take the furniture out including all the wall hangings .In other words empty the room. The put the main things back in the room in a new place if you can, then before you decorate the room look around the house for things that might look good in that room add back what you want of the stuff you had orig anally and add the "new " things that you have brought from other parts of the house ,ad you will see how much that changes things! the rest of what was in the bed room can be stored or used in the rest of the house! I have done this to several rooms in my home and the results are GREAT!!!! Good luck let us know how your bed room turns out.

Paint all the furniture the same colour, change the handles to match and co-ordinate the duvet cover, pillowcases and curtains. Have a main colour that runs through all the soft furnishings and a contrasting colour on the floor, either rugs, lino tiles or carpet. Also, have small objects in the main colour on your windsow sill, dressing table, etc.

Old houses and cottages always had mismatched furniture - so go for the "cottage look". A patchwork quilt rather than a modern duvet, curtains with flowers rather than geometric designs, some "old" pictures, a decorative wash basin and ewer, cottage-like rugs, a "cat" curled on the bed. Comfortable and homely rather than stark (which is going out, anyway)

Mismatch aka 'shabby chic' looks great, try to blend them together with cool accessories of the same colour. My home is intentionally shabby chic and I love it.

You could paint it all the same colour......cream works well on all different woods or melamine.Check out what paint you need for the different surfaces. You can buy panelling to put on which is easily glued and handles that all match. Good luck.......

If you have a theme for your bedroom, then I am sure the mismatched furniture wouldn't be so much of an issue. Also, good lighting helps a lot. My friend has a net of tiny snowdrop lights hanging at the head of her bed, and it looks so cool when the main light is off. Good luck. xx
