I hate polls like these...to me, they indicate that none of the unpaid interns at ESPN have a shred of creativity so they resort to using the "old standards" as filler... They might as well ask "Who would have won in a fight between the Green Lantern and Green Hornet?" I mean, both "questions" have equal relevance to real-world sports. I honestly believe that Ruth and Albert are more alike than different...Both are more than just power hitters, they are pure, professional hitters who also happen to hit for power....LOTS of power. The only reason I'd give the slightest edge to Albert is because I think Ruth had higher strikeout numbers. If Albert had been born in 1900 and Ruth in 1989 I think they'd still be great ballplayers...as for who's better? We'll just have to meet again in 70 years and see what kind of mark Albert has left behind.

i just voted for pujols...but its a pretty dumb poll if ask me...it doesn't make sense to compare ruth to the modern era of baseball
Jordan
I would chose albert anyday because back when ruth was playing the pitchers were not nearly as good as they are today. Today there are multiples of pitchers today that can 100 mph and there breaking stuff our way better these days. Babe ruth was fat and out of shape and i think ruth couldent even play mlb baseball today. pitchers back then throw around the 80s and if albert played it would not even be far.
It's because pitchers weren't as smart or as good as they are today. Back when Ruth played, baseball was just in the process of developing into what it is now. No one can even begin to guess how well Babe Ruth would do if he played today. It's impossible to compare past and present players.
Utley for President
The pitching back in Ruth's era was no where near as good as it is in our era. I hate how people try to compare hitters who were of a different generation. It's like comparing oranges and tangerines. If I HAD to vote, I would of voted for Albert Pujols. I'm surprised Babe Ruth even did that well in the ESPN.com vote. PS - Statistics can be the biggest piece of trickery in all of baseball. Additional Details: You're pointing out the best of the best from back then. I bet you couldn't name 5 starters from one team. Sheesh, stop trying to argue your point and just accept the reality of the situation. Most of those pitchers (not all) that you named would get crushed by today's hitters.

Pujos.

Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!! These supposed Sports experts of today obviously have no clue or respect for the players of yesteryear. While i respect Pujols as a good player he can't even tie Ruth's Shoes yet for these supposed experts to even make such a ridiculous statement. Knowing these supposed experts they will probably say that today's pitchers are better & that the legendary Pitchers you mentioned. Least those Pitchers weren't afraid to pitch more than 5 innings like today's wimpy Pitchers are.

It's an absolutely ridiculous poll to begin with. No one at ESPN (and no one who watches ESPN and takes part in these idiotic polls) has any idea how tough of a hitter Babe Ruth was. The strike zone when Ruth played was twice the size it is now. The strike zone now is microscopic (at least in practice, as opposed to theory), so it's a hell of a lot easier to hit when you know the pitcher has to put one over the middle of the plate and belt-high in order to get a strike called. Who knows how travel and hotel conditions in the 1920s and 1930s would have affected Pujols as a hitter? Instead of flying the equivalent of first class on every road trip and staying in luxury hotels, he'd have to try to sleep in a bunk on a New York to St Louis train. The conditions were so incredibly different in the 1920s that it's just absurd to try to compare these two guys. Both Ruth and Pujols would be outstanding hitters no matter when they played. There's no way in hell anyone could possibly compare the two in terms of how tough they were.

Pujols is the epitome of athleticism. Ruth was a pudgy guy who dominated in a new sport because no one else had any clue what they were doing.
